The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community relations and enhancing public trust through continuous outreach initiatives and intensified patrol operations across the country ahead of the festive season.
Speaking during a media engagement in Freetown, the Director of Operations, Dr. Martin Senesie, emphasized that the SLP is focused on transforming into a more responsive, accountable, and service-oriented institution that works in close partnership with the public.
“Our goal is to move from a ‘police force’ to a true ‘police service ’; one that serves and protects our people,” Dr. Senesie stated. “We have zero tolerance for drug abuse, corruption, or any form of misconduct within our ranks. Officers found engaging in such activities will face strict disciplinary measures.”
Dr. Senesie disclosed that all 38 police divisions nationwide have been directed to implement a uniform patrol strategy covering urban centres, border zones, beaches, and rural communities. He noted that these patrols are being conducted in collaboration with military units, particularly along key border areas, to prevent the smuggling of drugs and other illicit goods into the country.
He further explained that the SLP’s ongoing transformation from a reactive force to a proactive service is aimed at restoring public confidence and ensuring equal protection under the law.
“We want the public to see us not just as enforcers, but as partners in ensuring safety and peace,” he emphasized.
Dr. Senesie commended the media, civil society organizations, and local communities for their growing cooperation with the police, especially in sharing timely intelligence that has helped prevent and reduce crime nationwide.
“The fight against drugs and crime is a shared responsibility,” he remarked. “We must all work together to protect the next generation and preserve Sierra Leone’s future.”
He assured citizens that as the festive season approaches, the police will maintain heightened patrols and operational preparedness to guarantee public safety and ensure that peace prevails across the country.
“Every Sierra Leonean deserves to celebrate in safety. We have put adequate measures in place to make sure citizens go about their daily activities and festivities without fear,” Dr. Senesie concluded.
The SLP continues to roll out its community policing strategy, which emphasizes partnership, transparency, and accountability, core principles guiding its evolution from a traditional enforcement body into a people-centered public service dedicated to building safer communities.
