In a major step toward strengthening road safety compliance across Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) to enforce traffic regulations and curb the rising incidence of road traffic crashes nationwide.
The collaboration, formalised on Wednesday, 3rd December 2025, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marks a significant milestone in national efforts to ensure safer roads and highways. The ceremony, held at Cockerill Barracks on Wilkinson Road, was witnessed by Major-General Ngaujah and SLRSA’s Deputy Executive Director, Josie Abraham Scott-Manga.

According to the provisions of the MoU, the partnership seeks to address several critical challenges, including the removal of abandoned and breakdown vehicles that obstruct traffic and pose serious crash risks. It also aims to discourage road encroachment by garages and private vehicle owners, support traffic enforcement operations, ensure swift responses to public complaints on road obstructions, and mitigate the impact of off-street parking on surrounding communities.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, SLRSA Executive Director James Bagie Bio described the agreement as timely and essential, noting that it will significantly enhance the Authority’s capacity to fulfil its mandate of promoting road safety nationwide.
“The increasing number of road obstructions and abandoned vehicles has become a threat to public safety. This partnership will ensure that our roads are kept clear, orderly, and safe for all users,” Bio stated.
In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant-General Amara Idara Bangura, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to national service. He highlighted that since 2002, the RSLAF has been tasked with supporting Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), including other security institutions, in maintaining peace, order, and national stability.

He assured the SLRSA that the military will deploy both personnel and equipment to support enforcement operations, emphasising that road safety is a shared national responsibility.
Following the signing of the MoU, a joint technical committee comprising representatives from both institutions was established to commence immediate implementation of the agreed activities.
