TOCU Arrests 10 in Nationwide Drug Crackdown

Sierra Leone’s fight against drug trafficking and abuse has gained new momentum as the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) announced the arrest of ten suspects in a series of coordinated nationwide operations targeting major drug networks.

Speaking at a press briefing in Freetown, Head of TOCU, Michael J.K. Kabba, disclosed that the arrests followed sustained, intelligence-led investigations conducted across multiple districts over the past two months.

“In the last sixty days, we have carried out sixteen major operations and arrested ten key suspects linked to illegal drug activities,” Kabba stated. “Several of the suspects have already been charged to court, while others remain under investigation.”

He explained that the crackdown forms part of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at dismantling drug supply chains and addressing the growing impact of substance abuse on individuals and communities. The initiative, he added, is being implemented in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the National Public Health Agency, and various international partners.

“Our approach extends beyond law enforcement,” Kabba emphasised. “We are tackling the root causes of drug abuse through rehabilitation, aftercare, and reintegration. Drug abuse is not just a criminal issue; it is a serious public health concern.”

He further revealed that TOCU’s investigations have expanded to trace financial networks funding the drug trade, with early evidence suggesting cross-border links to regional trafficking routes. Kabba assured the public that all suspects will face justice, stressing that no individual is above the law when it comes to crimes that endanger Sierra Leone’s youth and security.

Police sources confirmed that the recent arrests involved individuals found in possession of large quantities of cannabis, synthetic drugs, and foreign currency, believed to be proceeds of illicit transactions. Investigations are ongoing to identify local collaborators and international connections.

Kabba commended the public for their growing cooperation and urged continued community support through the timely sharing of information with law enforcement agencies.

“This fight is not just for the police; it is a collective responsibility,” he said. “We must all stand together to protect our young people and safeguard Sierra Leone’s future.”

The announcement comes amid an intensified national campaign by the Sierra Leone Police and partner agencies to curb the surge in drug-related crimes, which continue to threaten public health, safety, and social stability across the country.
