A Social-Justice Novel of Silence, Truth, Accountability and Healing
Chain of Silence is a social-justice novel by Moses Kay Fembeh (Onoja) that blends psychological drama with investigative suspense to explore the consequences of silence in the face of suffering, exploitation and injustice.
Set largely against the backdrop of post-war Sierra Leone, the novel follows Mbalu, whose life becomes intertwined with experiences of vulnerability, loss and the difficult realities faced by children and women whose voices are often ignored.
Through a cast of complex characters and a story that moves across personal, family and institutional spaces, Chain of Silence explores themes of child trafficking, exploitation, early marriage, corruption, trauma, abuse, silence and accountability.
The novel examines how decisions made by individuals and institutions can shape the lives of vulnerable people long after the original events have passed.
At the heart of the story is a difficult question:
What happens when people know the truth but choose to remain silent?
As buried experiences gradually come to light, Chain of Silence examines the cost of protecting secrets, the consequences of looking away and the courage required to confront painful truths.
Yet the novel is not only about suffering. It is also a story of resilience, dignity, accountability and healing. It considers whether individuals and communities can confront the past, break cycles of silence and begin the difficult process of rebuilding lives damaged by circumstances beyond their control.
With its combination of human drama and investigative suspense, Chain of Silence invites readers to look beyond individual stories and consider the systems, relationships and silences that can allow injustice to persist.
It is ultimately a story about what happens when silence becomes a chain—and what it takes to break it.
